   Welcome to the Uber vs. Taxi information page. Our goal is to provide the TRUTH between the two types of transportation along with references where you can check out for yourself what is true and best for you and not rely on what I say as the author of this article. As a taxi driver and owner with more than 30 years experience, I get discouraged when I see any company not being completely truthful in their advertising and misleading the public.

   As for this author, I have been in the business for more than 30 years, most of that time here in Richmond, VA. During this time, unfortunately I have heard many reports that there have been cab drivers in the industry who have taken advantage of customers. I have done my part to weed out those drivers along with joining other informed drivers and have endeavored to put them out of business as long as the offended customer could give us enough information to know who these drivers were or was willing to speak with the police officers who issue their taxi permits. Public safety has always been a part of the taxi industry and cab drivers have had to abide by the laws and codes of local enforcement as long as I have been in business and long before Uber and Lyft were even thought of. The codes of local laws and ordiances in Richmond treat the taxi industry like the same as a public utility like the electric company. Rate increases required the now dissolved Taxicab Advisory Board to approve and then the Richmond City Council and the three neighboring County Board of Supervisors to agree and approve. The last general rate increase took place back in January 2009. There are rules, laws and a code that is about 16 pages thick in text that are made and enforced by the local police departments in the region. The actual code is provided by Henrico County, VA online at THIS LINK for those who may be interested.

   Taxi drivers and their vehicles are subject to inspection and enforcement at any place and at any time. The police departments enforce who can drive a cab, how old the taxis can be, what vehicles can be cabs and how many miles those taxis can have on them before being retired as well as many other issues affecting our day to day operations. The rates we charge have been the same since 2009 and we did not receive any increase when gas prices were almost $4.00 a gallon. The same applies when we drive in severe weather conditions in our local area. Cabs contracted who regularly work the Richmond Airport have even a higher level of scrutiny and the same enforcement in the past and still today. These set of rules are far and beyond what other regions are subject to as Richmond sets the highest standards anywhere as they realize that our professional drivers make the first impression for passengers who are visiting our capital city for the first time and everytime. For those drivers who do not follow the law or have vehicles that fail to be compliant, they will no longer have a job as a taxi driver in our region.

   Our goal is to always deliver you to your destination safely at a fair price by a pleasant, smiling and courteous professional driver. We want you to be happy. We want our customer to be SMARTER, SAVVY and INFORMED and always want to be our favorite customer. CONCLUSION: Self explanatory, but I would like to add that to be a BBB Member you agree to  a truth in advertising clause in the membership agreement. The BBB Review now lists a "F" Rating for Uber and has continued to do so for a long extended period of time now. Their rating is based on consumers registering 3,661 complaints filed and simply 3,358 COMPLAINTS UBER FAILED TO RESPOND TO AT ALL. This poor pratice still continues even after new management has promised changes for more than a year now! The user reviews have  increased to 540 from 290 about a year ago, with the majority 1-star ratings and there are 5 alerts of government actions listed as well. Conclusion: While Uber's rates are slightly lower possibly for a smaller vehicle, the margin of what you will be charged in the end can be significantly higher due to added on extra fees and or higher surge pricing. Taxis by law are not allowed to charge surcharges for weather, peak times or any other reason. Uber is not a taxi, but defined as a transportation network company and not obligated by the same LAWS locally and will charge more when determining factors and conditions are present. Uber also adds an additional booking fee on to their trip charge. In the end, Uber's charges may end up being considerably more than a taxi and remember UBER IS NOT A TAXI. Passengers have recourse through licensing authorities with taxis while passengers do not through Uber when you agree to terms and conditions when setting up an account which appears to be among the reasons there are so many complaints lodged against them at the BBB. When you agree to Uber's Terms and Conditions; you agree not to hold Uber responsible for your driver's actions as they are considered a third party. In addition, you agree to settle any claims by arbitration and not the US Courts. However, there has been a recent change regarding being able to proceeed with court action against Uber drivers due to the number of sexual misconduct allegations involving Uber drivers recently. Uber requires you to agree and be bound by their Terms and Conditions to set up an account. You must provide a credit card to be on file and they charge to your card the total cost they deem to be valid without any prior approval from you. You can get an estimate through their app, but it states the rate may change and is not final until the driver notifies Uber that the trip has ended. Uber decides what areas they will provide service to while taxis work the entire area where they are licensed and do not demand a credit card in order to provide you service 99% of the time.
